Farley Music Festival – Opera Lyrica: Love Won & Lost
Date/Time
Throughout operatic history, audiences have been taken through extreme emotional highs and lows: victories and defeats, successes and failures, elations and sorrows. Nowhere are these extremes more clearly illustrated than in matters of the heart. In this concert featuring some of the country’s greatest up-and-coming talents, Opera Lyrica will explore just how joyous and painful love can be, through some of the canon’s most spellbinding arias and ensembles. Opera Lyrica was founded in 2012 by Nicholas Simpson (General Director) and Paola Cuffolo (Artistic Director) while both at Oxford University, to try and help young singers , musicians, directors, designers and technicians gain experience in opera as well as to try to increase opera’s audience in general, especially amongst the younger generation. They believe that opera should be accessible to everyone. Opera Lyrica have performed to great acclaim in All Saints’ Church on three previous occasions. In 2014 they presented Handel’s Acis & Galatea followed in the Spring of 2015 with a double bill of Blow’s Venus & Adonis and Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas. Such was the success of these ventures that they were invited to return ‘In Concert’ on the final night of last year’s festival to perform famous pieces from well- known operas on the theme of love. The concert was a huge success and in consequence, we have invited them to return to the festival ‘In Concert’ in 2016 to embrace a different musical theme : Love Won and Lost.
