FMF 2020 : David Gray (Piano)

Thursday 18 June 2020 at 19:00

David Gray wowed everyone with his performance of the rarely played Alkan Concerto in 2013 and he returns by popular demand. David is a modest person, but a player of brilliance. His programme will include works by Chopin. He was nominated for the German Piano Award and you can see his playing here   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa1iIwsjT1Y – but you should also know that David is in addition a phenomenal theatre organist, in which capacity he has toured the world; you can see an example here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jblvwfVf0HI

David Gray was born in 1990 and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, and discovered his musical abilities at the age of 4, when he taught himself to play the piano by ear. Shortly afterwards he began piano lessons in Glasgow with Anne Crawford until the age of 13, when he was offered a place at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh. He spent five years there, studying piano with Richard Beauchamp and organ with Simon Nieminski, and in this time won numerous prizes in festivals around Scotland. David also pursues the art of playing theatre organs in his spare time, and after winning an international competition in Los Angeles in 2005, has performed on the instrument extensively in the UK, Switzerland, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

David is in his first year on the postgraduate MA course at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He also undertook his bachelors degree at the Academy for which he received a first class honours, and has received full scholarships for both of these degrees. Since 2008 his professor has been Hamish Milne, and in his final year of undergraduate in 2013 he received the highest grade in the piano department at the Royal Academy of Music, earning him the Leslie England Memorial Prize and the Walter Macfarren Gold Medal.

Tickets £17.50 (£10.50 for Friends of Farley Music) from Salisbury Playhouse (01722 320333) or on the door, to include an interval drink and parking
