The Cathedral Girls’ Choir was founded in 1998 and sang its first service in May 1999. Comprising of around twenty girls, aged between 12 and 17 years old, and attending several local schools, they sing one service every Sunday with the Cathedral Lay Clerks, and rehearsals are held twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays after school.
The girls also take part in major services in the Cathedral, including Midnight Mass at Christmas, and at Easter. In 2010, the girls appeared several times on BBC Television, including Easter Morning Eucharist live, Songs of Praise and Carols for Christmas Day. They are currently in the middle of recording a CD of music for Remembrance and All Souls (with the boys choristers and Lay Clerks) and will also be recording an Evensong for BBC Radio 3 at the Southern Cathedrals Festival in Winchester next July.
The girls regularly give concerts and sing Evensongs around the Diocese, and have also visited Norway, Sweden and Italy.
