The Pitton Putter was the brainchild of Wally Winchcombe. In addition to being a keen golfer Wally was an active member of the village community. Like the best golfers, Wally recognised that there were two key elements to the game; good company on the course followed by sociable reflection on the day’s round.
In the late 1980’s Wally found an old Hickory Putter in the back of his garage and thought that it would be a wonderful idea to hold an annual golfing competition within the village, followed by a meal in the back bar of the Silver Plough. From such ideas tradition is created.
The Pitton Putter is a feature of the back bar of the Silver Plough. Like all golfing trophy boards it enables winners to reflect on past glories and losers to reflect on what might have been.
Played in the autumn at High Post Golf Club the Putter is a Stableford competition that is open to all golfers living in the village of Pitton. Players need to have a current or previous handicap certificate. The golf is followed by a meal in the Silver Plough where non-playing partners are also welcome to attend.
The date for the 2008 Putter is still to be finalised. Details will be soon posted here. In the meantime if you would like to register your interest please contact
